Letter from the department Head
Praise is due to Allah, who has taught by the pen, taught man that
which he knew not. Blessing and peace be upon the Prophet of guidance, his
family, his companions, and those who followed his footsteps until the Day of
Judgment.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking a
look at the website of the Statistics department, part of the faculty of
Sciences at King Abdulaziz University. Through the pages of this website you
can find out more about the department’s academic programs, seminars and
contacting information of the department's members.
The department, which was established in 1979, has distinguished
group of professors and lecturers specializing in different areas of
statistics, most of them had received their higher education in the best and
most popular universities in the world. The department has the honor of
membership of the professors who have served in the department and moved on to
serve the country in some other sectors (Professor Abdullah Alharbi: An elected
member of the Saudi Consultative Assembly, Professor Bakri Assas: The President of the Umm Al
Qura University and Professor Fahad Alaboud: The Dean of Deanship of Community
Service and Continuing Education).
The existing facilities of the department and the diversity of
interests of the faculties create an appropriate learning environment and rare
opportunities for innovation. The department has 21 faculties; their interests
include applied probability, biostatistics, Bayesian statistics, operation
research, survival analysis, nonparametric and parametric inference, order
statistics, and linear models. The department offers BSc. degree for the
undergraduate students, MS and PhD degrees for the postgraduate
students.
For students, I would like to emphasize the fact that the country
is still looking forward to have groups of modern pioneer statisticians. There
are many jobs in the universities as well as the private sectors for
statisticians that the country wishes to occupy them by national cadres. For
this, I would encourage you to challenge yourselves and win the bet by joining
Statistics department. International students are most welcome to apply for the
available programs in the department through the website of the deanship of
graduate studies. They can also apply for funding, housing and getting
scholarships for study.
